The Sunflower Project

This is the Sun Flower Project. The Sun Flower Project is all about sneaking around my own house and trying to take as many pictures of my mom's art as I can without her noticing somethings up. I am dedicating this website to her and it's her birthday gift :] She gets to choose what to put on and all that after I show her this, but I wanted her to get one. I just know she would never get it started by herself haha. So here it goes!

Shelley Fagin is a mother of two and has two step children as well. She is married to Mark Fagin, her personal photographer for many of her references. Although she is very talented, she was unable to produce art for many years. Just recently she has been able to use her gifts again and she has been making many oil pieces. Shelley loves painting in watercolor and oil paints, although she began using graphite and colored pencil. This piece to the left is a triptych of three different flowers and was drawn in colored pencil. Her favorite things to paint are flowers, which stems from her love of gardening. The picture on the right is one she did at an art camp in sepia. She worked backwards, erasing out the lighter shades. She also enjoys painting birds in her works, which is not seen yet, but is in some of her later pieces.

This is a drawing of her eldest, Chelsea Loren Edwards. Her daughter also takes after her in art. Shelley would often take her daughter to the library where they would read many children's books together. In Chelsea's later years, this would make her interested in making some books of her own. This piece was made using graphite, as was the right piece. The drawing was made as a study and now sits in her art room. Many of the pieces Shelley makes, she puts up upon her walls as inspiration for more artwork to come. She has become much more dedicated to her craft as is attending more classes to better herself as an artist. As time seems to continue, she gets strikingly more developed and without much practice. Now her art is showing much more apparent jumps in how well she is doing.

While she is talented in the art of 2D, she also does very well in 3D. Pursuing all different mediums and ideas, Shelley tried her hand in mask making and executed the craft beautifully. While the two on the sides are mixed medium and paper mache masks, the one in the middle is made of clay. Her love of nature can be seen in each of these works, with the bountiful head dress of the middle mask or the fluidity of the fabric falling off from the side masks. Although she had an eye for the 3D arts,
she greatly enjoyed her gift to make 2D appear 3D. Her son, Keegan Edwards, is now very interested by 3D modeling.

Shelley began painting with watercolours and enjoyed their bright, vivid colours. One of her first pieces was a painting of pansies from her garden. Then for a while she did not work on her art. Busy with taking care of her family and other issues, she put her artistic life on hold. She did not finish this sunflower painting until much later, when her daughter was going off to college. She practiced with some techniques before she applied them to her watercolours, making the piece work as a whole when finished.

As she grew in tallent with each piece, so did her desire for different mediums. Shelley made her first oil painting. Although she had paid for an oil painting class from a supposedly amazing artist, the teacher at the last moment changed the subject matter to pastels. Not wanting to let her oils go to waste, Mrs. Fagin decided to put her time to use working on her first oil painting in the class. She began teaching herself little by little and getting helpful tips from another artist who had painted in oils before. Her first painting was an amazing success. She found a deep love oils and began to paint many more. Although she enjoys watercolours as well, she has made many more paintings in oil and her husband especially loves to see her work in oils. The next piece she began working on was a more of a personal piece - a red poppy with a close up view of a fountain her son and her husband put together in her back yard.

Shelley Fagin lives with art all throughout her life. Her garden, her paintings, and her family are all her masterpieces that continue to grow with her. As her garden flourishes, so do her many talents, not only as an artist, but as a mother and a wife as well.

Happy Birthday, Mom.
Love, Chelsea
